PATTAYA, Thailand — The nuclear-powered US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has arrived in Thailand after spending a record 250 consecutive days at sea without a port visit, giving nearly 5,000 sailors and Marines a much-needed break.
The carrier has docked at a port about 40 minutes from the popular beach resort of Pattaya, a city long associated with nightlife and entertainment. The visit also carries strong historical significance, as Pattaya became a major destination for American troops seeking rest and relaxation during the Vietnam War.
Pattaya Businesses Hope for Tourism Boost
Local businesses are hoping the arrival of thousands of American service members will provide a much-needed boost to the city’s tourism economy.
Pattaya’s famous Walking Street remains relatively quiet, with many businesses struggling amid the impact of the war involving Iran and weaker consumer spending. Shopkeepers and restaurant owners are hoping US sailors, who have spent months at sea, will spend money during their stay.
Some businesses have even put up signs welcoming American military personnel and are offering special discounts.
Authorities Tighten Security and Set Restrictions
Thai authorities are taking steps to ensure the visit passes without major incidents. Hundreds of police officers have been deployed around Pattaya’s entertainment areas.
US service members have also been advised to avoid several locations and activities, including Soi 6, an area known for its concentration of go-go bars. Cannabis shops and certain high-risk water sports, including jet skis and paragliding, are also off-limits.
Thai officials have reminded local businesses not to overcharge American visitors and have urged both residents and tourists to maintain good relations during the visit.
Carrier Diverted to Middle East After Iran Conflict
The USS Abraham Lincoln left San Diego in November for what was initially expected to be a six-month deployment in the Pacific and South China Sea.
However, the carrier was later diverted to the Gulf after the United States and Israel began military operations against Iran in late February.
The extended deployment reportedly placed significant strain on the crew. Some members of the US Congress recently raised concerns over reports of food shortages, malfunctioning toilets and mental stress among sailors. The US Navy acknowledged that conditions had been difficult but said the crew had received adequate support.
A Historic Return to Pattaya
Pattaya Mayor Poramase Ngampiches said the arrival of US military personnel has historical importance for the city, noting that visits by American troops decades ago helped transform Pattaya from a small fishing community into an internationally known tourist destination.
The Thai and US authorities hope the current visit will showcase a different side of modern Pattaya, including its family-friendly attractions, sports, wellness facilities and other tourism activities.
The USS Abraham Lincoln is expected to leave Thailand on 6 September, beginning its long journey back across the Pacific.
For Pattaya’s struggling businesses, the short visit could provide a welcome boost — while for the exhausted crew, it offers a rare opportunity to rest after one of the longest stretches at sea in the ship’s history.
