OTTAWA — Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has said India does not need to become a “superpower” to earn the status of a Vishwaguru (world teacher), arguing that the country’s character and tradition of serving humanity are the foundations of its global role.
Addressing members of the Indian community in Canada, Bhagwat said India’s rise should ultimately contribute to creating a “more united and freer human society.”
He said India had never sought to conquer or forcibly convert other nations. Wherever Indians travelled—from Mexico to Siberia and Southeast Asia—they contributed knowledge, mathematics, Ayurveda and civilisational values, he said.
Referring to the Hindu philosophy of unity in diversity, Bhagwat said India had extended assistance whenever crises emerged around the world. Helping others without seeking domination, he argued, was part of India’s civilisational ethos.
Bhagwat also said the term “Hindu” could not be confined to a particular religion, language or way of life. He argued that Hindu philosophy embraces and respects everyone.
Citing the examples of Parsis and Jews, he said India had provided shelter to persecuted communities whenever they sought refuge.
The RSS chief also highlighted major global challenges, including climate change, environmental degradation and weapons of mass destruction. He argued that a model of material development that harms society or the environment cannot be considered sustainable.
As an alternative, Bhagwat emphasised the balancing principles of India’s ancient concept of Dharma. He also invoked the Sanskrit principle Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning “the world is one family,” saying India seeks to lead the world through its example rather than by imposing its ideas on others.
