The United States has warned that all Iranian airlines could be forced to suspend their operations worldwide within the next two days as Washington tightens sanctions on Iran’s aviation sector.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent issued the warning in an interview with American broadcaster CNBC, saying Iranian airlines operating internationally would face mounting pressure under the latest US measures.
Bessent also warned countries where Iranian airlines continue to operate that they could face consequences for providing services to those carriers. He said Iranian aircraft should not be provided with fuel or landing services, while companies selling tickets for Iranian airlines could also face restrictions.
According to Bessent, entities that continue to support Iranian airlines could potentially be cut off from the US dollar-based financial system.
The warning follows sanctions announced by the United States on September 8 targeting Iran’s aviation sector. The measures were aimed at restricting the operations of the remaining 27 Iranian airlines still operating around the world.
The US administration says the latest sanctions are intended to increase pressure on Iran’s aviation industry and further restrict its ability to operate internationally.
The warning could have significant implications for Iranian airlines that rely on access to foreign airports, aviation services, international ticketing networks and the global financial system.
