WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has said the war with Iran could end shortly after the country’s midterm elections, accusing Tehran of prolonging the conflict in an effort to shape the US political landscape.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One before departing for Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday, Trump said, “right after our midterms, the Iran war will end,” according to Qatar-based Al Jazeera.
Trump alleged that Iran was seeking to influence the November 3 elections by creating conditions that could help weaker and more favourable political figures gain power in the United States.
He suggested that Tehran was hoping Democrats would return to power and offer concessions that could allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons.
“Iran’s only goal is to acquire a nuclear weapon,” Trump said, warning that the world would face serious danger if Tehran obtained one.
The November 3 midterm elections will determine control of Congress. Democrats are seeking to win control of one or both chambers, while Trump’s Republican Party currently holds narrow majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Trump’s remarks come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with Iran’s nuclear programme remaining a central point of contention in the conflict.
