Chattogram – Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for the Sanatani Jagaran Jote, was released on a five-hour parole on Thursday following the death of his mother, authorities said.
Chattogram Additional District Magistrate Syed Mahbubul Haque approved the parole order around noon. Das was released from Chattogram Central Jail at 4pm, according to jail authorities.
The parole was granted following an application submitted by his brother, Anjan Kumar Dhar, to Chattogram Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia.
Das’s mother, Sandhya Rani Dhar, 72, died at Pundarik Dham in Hathazari on Thursday morning. She had been suffering from cancer and had recently received treatment at Chattogram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital before being taken to the religious site on Wednesday night.
“We have taken the necessary steps following the family’s application. His parole application has been approved and he has been granted parole for five hours,” Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia said.
Chattogram Central Jail Senior Superintendent Iqbal Hossain said the jail authorities released Das at 4pm after receiving the official approval documents.
Das is the youngest of three brothers and a sister. His family had earlier sought his temporary release so he could see his seriously ill mother.
Legal cases against Das
Das was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024, in a case filed over an alleged insult to Bangladesh’s national flag. The case was filed at Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram on October 31, 2024, by Firoz Khan, then general secretary of the BNP’s Chandgaon-Mohra ward unit, naming Das and 18 others as accused.
On November 26, 2024, violence erupted in Chattogram following a court hearing related to Das’s bail. Lawyer Saiful Islam was beaten and hacked to death during the clashes. His father, Jamal Uddin, later filed a murder case naming 31 people.
