August 5: An Indian vessel sank near Yemen’s territorial waters after being struck by what was believed to be a missile or another projectile, according to Indian authorities. The incident occurred in the Red Sea, raising fresh concerns over maritime security in the region.
India’s Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, described the incident as an “unprovoked attack.” He confirmed that all 14 crew members aboard the vessel, MSV Faiz Noor-e-Aliya, were safely rescued by the Yemeni Coast Guard. The rescued crew included 13 Indian nationals.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sonowal said he had instructed the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) to coordinate immediately with all relevant agencies to ensure the safety and welfare of the rescued seafarers and provide them with all necessary assistance.
The attack comes amid persistent security threats to commercial shipping in and around the Red Sea and Yemeni waters, one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.
