A criminal case has been filed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, against an Indian national over allegations of embezzling US$1.3 million (approximately BDT 154 million). According to sources familiar with the matter, the accused is the father-in-law of the son of BNP leader Shama Obaid and serves as a senior executive at a Dubai-based commercial company.
According to documents and screenshots from the Dubai Police service portal obtained by The Voice, the case has been registered at Bur Dubai Police Station under the charge of “Breach of Trust through Embezzlement.” The records show Service Status: Completed, Reference Number: 226004250290, Report No. 6635/2026, and Case Number: 22668704.
The documents indicate that the criminal complaint was initiated on March 5, 2026. The complaint verification process and witness statements were completed on March 27, 2026, followed by the formal registration of the criminal report on March 29, 2026.
Another document reviewed by The Voice shows that a Travel Ban was imposed on March 31, 2026. The order identifies the investigating authority as the Dubai Police GHQ – General Department of Criminal Investigation, Bur Dubai Police Station, and lists the case type as “Breach of Trust through Embezzlement.” The document also indicates that the fine amount is AED 0, suggesting that judicial proceedings remain ongoing.
The complainant is Manish Shahwan, an Indian national and owner of the company where the accused was employed. The company’s legal interests are being represented by Rania Mohamed, an Egyptian lawyer.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly abused his position within the company and misappropriated US$1.3 million belonging to the business. Prosecutors have directed him to submit evidence and explanations in response to the allegations. If the explanation is deemed insufficient, the case may be referred to the Dubai Criminal Court for trial.
However, it is important to note that the filing of a criminal case and the imposition of a travel ban do not constitute a finding of guilt. The allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial determination, and any final conclusion will depend on the outcome of court proceedings.
Neither the accused nor his legal representatives have issued any public statement regarding the allegations. No response has been received from Shama Obaid regarding the matter.
