Bangladesh Make History with First Home ODI Victory Over Australia

Mossadek Hossain stars with an unbeaten 86 and Nahid Rana claims four wickets as Bangladesh secure an 86-run DLS win in the series opener in Mirpur.

Dhaka, June 9, 2026 — Bangladesh recorded a historic victory over Australia in the first One-Day International (ODI) of the series, defeating the visitors by 86 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

The win marked Bangladesh’s first-ever home ODI victory against Australia and their first ODI triumph over the five-time world champions since 2005.

After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh posted a competitive total of 284 for 8 in 50 overs, thanks largely to an unbeaten 86 off 70 balls from Mossadek Hossain, who was making his return to the national side after four years. His innings included seven fours and three sixes and helped the hosts recover from a middle-order slowdown.

Earlier, Nazmul Hossain Shanto scored 67, while Tanzid Hasan contributed 54, laying a solid foundation for the innings. Towhid Hridoy added 31 runs, and Taskin Ahmed chipped in with a quick 20 late in the innings.

In response, Australia suffered an early collapse as Bangladesh’s pace attack struck decisively. Taskin Ahmed dismissed Matthew Short with the first ball of the innings, while Mustafizur Rahman trapped Marnus Labuschagne lbw in the following over.

Fast bowler Nahid Rana then took control of the match, removing captain Josh Inglis and later breaking a crucial partnership by dismissing Alex Carey for 47. Rana finished with impressive figures of 4 for 41, while Mustafizur and Mossadek claimed two wickets each.

Australia were reduced to 191 for 9 in 42.2 overs when lightning and rain forced play to be halted. With conditions preventing a restart, Bangladesh were declared winners by 86 runs under the DLS method.
Cameron Green fought a lone battle for Australia, remaining unbeaten on 52, but his effort was not enough to prevent a historic defeat.

Mossadek Hossain was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance, which included an unbeaten 86 with the bat and two wickets with the ball.

The victory gives Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the ODI series and represents one of the most memorable wins in the country’s cricket history.
