Kolkata, May 6, 2026 — The swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister of West Bengal is scheduled to take place on May 9 at 10:00 AM at the historic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata.
The development comes after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory in the state assembly elections, winning 207 out of 294 seats and establishing a clear majority.
However, the party has not yet officially announced its legislative leader, who is expected to take oath as Chief Minister during the ceremony.
Outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign, alleging electoral irregularities and a forced attempt to seize power. The leader of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) stated that there is “no question” of her stepping down.
Her refusal has drawn sharp criticism from BJP leaders, who have described her stance as “absurd” and accused her of attempting to remain in the political spotlight.
The situation has intensified political tensions in West Bengal, raising concerns about the transition of power and the possibility of constitutional challenges in the coming days.
