WASHINGTON, April 30, 2026 — U.S. President Donald Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed interest in assisting with issues related to Iran’s enriched uranium, following a recent phone conversation between the two leaders.
According to Trump, Putin proposed potential involvement in handling Iran’s uranium enrichment process—one of the most sensitive elements in ongoing efforts to resolve tensions with Iran.
Speaking at the Oval Office, Trump described the call as “very good” but made clear that his immediate priority remains ending the war in Ukraine. He said he told Putin, “Before you help me, I want to end your war.”
The conversation, which reportedly lasted over 90 minutes, also touched on broader geopolitical tensions, including the possibility of a ceasefire in Ukraine. Trump expressed optimism that a resolution to the conflict could come “relatively soon.”
On Iran, Trump indicated that Putin is willing to play a role in managing enriched uranium—potentially including storage or oversight—an idea that has surfaced in previous diplomatic efforts, including discussions tied to the 2015 nuclear agreement.
While Trump did not rule out the possibility of Iran transferring uranium abroad, he signaled that resolving the Ukraine war takes precedence for now. Analysts say the uranium issue remains central to any future agreement involving Iran’s nuclear program, amid ongoing regional instability.
The call highlights the complex overlap between multiple global crises, with Washington balancing negotiations on Iran’s nuclear ambitions and efforts to end the prolonged conflict in Ukraine.
