The Russian ambassador to Bangladesh has dismissed allegations of financial embezzlement in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, calling the claims a “smear campaign” aimed at discrediting former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Speaking at an official media briefing, the envoy said there is no credible evidence to support accusations of misappropriation of funds in the Russian-backed project. He described the reports as “politically motivated misinformation” designed to undermine both the project and the reputation of Bangladesh’s former leadership.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, a flagship infrastructure initiative developed with Russian cooperation, is considered a cornerstone of Bangladesh’s long-term energy strategy. The project has drawn significant public and political attention due to its scale, cost, and strategic importance.

The Russian envoy emphasized that all financial and technical processes related to the project are being conducted under strict international standards and oversight. He warned that spreading unverified allegations could damage bilateral relations and erode public trust in critical national projects.

Analysts say the controversy reflects a broader trend of competing narratives and misinformation in Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape. Large-scale infrastructure projects, particularly those involving foreign partnerships, have increasingly become focal points of political debate.

The development comes amid ongoing political instability in Bangladesh following the events of August 5, 2024, when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was removed from office and an interim government led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus took power with backing from the military and Islamist factions.

Human rights organizations have since reported widespread violence and abuses. Ain O Salish Kendra documented at least 318 deaths between August 5 and 8, 2024, while the Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist, Christian Unity Council reported over 2,000 incidents of violence against minority communities in the weeks that followed.

Observers note that in such a charged environment, allegations—particularly those involving high-profile figures and strategic projects—can quickly gain traction, underscoring the need for fact-based reporting and careful verification.
