Bangladesh opened their three-match T20I series against New Zealand with a statement victory, chasing down a daunting 183-run target to secure a six-wicket win in Chattogram. The win not only gave the hosts a 1-0 lead but also marked their highest successful run chase on home soil.

At the center of the triumph was Tawhid Hridoy, whose unbeaten 51 off just 27 balls anchored the chase with composure and authority. Coming under scrutiny after recent performances, Hridoy responded in emphatic fashion, delivering a match-winning knock that underlined his growing importance in Bangladesh’s middle order.

Bangladesh’s Record Chase Turns the Tide

Chasing 182, Bangladesh found themselves under pressure early after losing wickets at regular intervals. By the 11th over, the scoreboard read 77-3, and the required run rate was climbing. However, Hridoy shifted the momentum with calculated aggression, first combining with Parvez Hossain Emon for a crucial 57-run stand, and later with Shamim Hossain in an unbeaten 49-run partnership.

Parvez played a blistering cameo, scoring 28 off just 14 balls, injecting much-needed pace into the innings. Shamim then provided the finishing touch with a rapid 31 not out from 13 deliveries, ensuring Bangladesh crossed the finish line with 12 balls to spare.

Captain Liton Das acknowledged the challenge of the chase, noting that the pitch was not easy for batting and emphasizing the importance of contributions from the middle order.

New Zealand’s Strong Start Falls Short

Earlier, New Zealand posted a competitive 182-6, built on half-centuries from Dane Cleaver and Katene Clarke. The duo added 88 runs for the second wicket, putting Bangladesh on the back foot early in the innings.

Stand-in captain Nick Kelly added a quick 39 late in the innings, helping push the total to a challenging level. Despite their strong start, New Zealand’s innings lost momentum in the middle overs, preventing them from reaching the 200-mark often considered par at the Chattogram venue.

Bangladesh’s leg-spinner Rishad Hossain played a key role in halting the visitors’ progress, dismissing both set batters in quick succession and breaking the backbone of New Zealand’s innings.

Turning Point: Middle-Order Brilliance

The defining phase of the match came after the 11th over of Bangladesh’s chase. With pressure mounting, Hridoy launched a counterattack, targeting New Zealand’s bowlers, including Ish Sodhi, who had earlier struck twice to tighten the contest.

A costly 17th over from New Zealand, which yielded 25 runs, effectively sealed the game for Bangladesh. The combination of aggressive stroke play, disciplined chasing, and composure under pressure showcased a maturing Bangladesh side capable of competing at the highest level.

A Statement Win for Bangladesh

This victory carries added significance beyond just the series lead. It reflects Bangladesh’s growing confidence in chasing big totals and highlights the emergence of young talents stepping up in crucial moments.

For Hridoy, the innings serves as a strong response to recent criticism, reaffirming his place as a dependable match-winner. For the team, it is a morale-boosting performance that sets the tone for the remainder of the series.

The second T20I will be played in Chattogram on Thursday, where Bangladesh will look to seal the series, while New Zealand aim to bounce back and level the contest.
