Dhaka, Bangladesh | April 26, 2026 — Concerns are growing over a possible resurgence of militant activity in Bangladesh after Police Headquarters issued a confidential alert warning of potential attacks on important installations across the country.
The warning, sent to police units nationwide, has prompted authorities to strengthen security at critical locations, including government facilities, law enforcement and military establishments, religious sites, and public gathering areas.
Shift to Low-Profile Operations
Although Bangladesh has not experienced any major militant attacks in recent years, intelligence officials say extremist networks have not been completely dismantled. Instead, they appear to be reorganizing quietly through small, cell-based structures.
Security sources indicate that these groups are increasingly relying on online communication, encrypted messaging platforms, and “low-profile” operations. Their strategies include digital radicalization, the use of lone attackers, and small-scale improvised explosive devices (IEDs), making detection more difficult.
Recent Incidents Raise Alarm
Authorities stepped up vigilance following an explosion at Ummul Qura International Madrasa in Keraniganj’s Hasnabad area on December 26 last year. The blast damaged parts of the building and nearby structures. A second explosion occurred at the same location a few days later, leaving one person injured.
In subsequent operations, law enforcement agencies arrested 17 suspects, including alleged militant leader and bomb-maker Al Amin Sheikh. The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) confirmed that several of those arrested were formally charged in the case.
In a separate development, intelligence agencies detained Istiaq Ahmed Sami, who is also known by several aliases. During interrogation, investigators found that he had regular contact with two dismissed military personnel—an issue that remains under investigation.
Possible International Connections
Authorities are also examining potential international links. According to security sources, there are indications that Sami may have had connections with the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba. However, officials emphasize that this claim has not yet been confirmed and is still under investigation.
Earlier reports in Indian media stated that eight members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, including seven Bangladeshi nationals, were arrested from different parts of India after a two-month operation.
Potential Targets Identified
The police warning mentioned several possible targets, including the National Parliament, police and military installations, religious institutions, entertainment venues, and public spaces such as Shahbagh.
Authorities warned that attackers could use explosives, firearms, or sharp weapons, and even military or police armories could be targeted.
Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to increase surveillance, strengthen security arrangements, and take legal action against suspicious individuals.
Background: A History of Militancy
Bangladesh has experienced significant militant violence in the past. The 2004 grenade attack on a political rally and the coordinated nationwide bombings on August 17, 2005, marked major turning points in the country’s history of extremism. Those attacks were claimed by Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).
Following the 2016 Holey Artisan Bakery attack in Dhaka, security forces launched extensive counterterrorism operations that significantly weakened organized militant networks.
However, experts warn that the current threat is more complex, as extremist activities have shifted to the digital space, where recruitment and ideological spread are harder to control.
Call for Caution
Security analysts and former military officials have urged caution in interpreting early intelligence reports. Retired Lieutenant General Md. Mahfuzur Rahman stated that it would be premature to draw conclusions based on initial findings or isolated arrests.
He emphasized that precautionary alerts are a normal part of security measures and do not necessarily indicate an imminent large-scale attack.
He also rejected concerns about extremist influence within the armed forces, highlighting their strong professional structure and discipline.
Ongoing Monitoring
Authorities say the situation is being closely monitored and stress that vigilance is essential. While militant groups may be attempting to reorganize, law enforcement agencies remain active in preventing any potential threats.
