Dhaka, Bangladesh | April 25, 2026 — The death toll from a growing measles outbreak in Bangladesh continues to rise, with 11 more children reported dead in the past 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The latest fatalities were recorded between 8:00 a.m. Friday and 8:00 a.m. Saturday, bringing the total number of deaths linked to measles and its symptoms to 209 since March 15.
Health authorities said the number of suspected measles cases surged by 1,058 in the last 24 hours alone, while 229 cases have been laboratory-confirmed during the same period.
Since the outbreak intensified in mid-March, a total of 20,375 patients with suspected measles have been admitted to hospitals across the country. Among them, 17,091 have been discharged after receiving treatment.
The rising number of infections and fatalities—particularly among children—has placed increasing pressure on healthcare facilities, with pediatric wards in several hospitals reportedly overwhelmed.
Public health experts warn that the continued spread of Measles, a highly contagious viral disease,
signals gaps in vaccination coverage and outbreak response measures. They emphasize the urgent need for mass immunization campaigns, improved surveillance, and community awareness to contain the crisis.
Officials have yet to confirm whether additional emergency measures will be introduced, but efforts are ongoing to manage the outbreak and prevent further loss of life.
