Europe could face a significant aviation fuel crisis within the next three weeks due to the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit chokepoint.

According to a report by the Associated Press, Olivier Jankovec, head of Airports Council International Europe, has warned of a looming “systemic jet fuel shortage” across the European Union. In a letter cited on Saturday (April 11), he emphasized that the disruption could severely impact the region’s aviation sector.

Jankovec noted that the crisis may hit just as Europe enters its peak summer travel season, potentially disrupting flight operations, increasing ticket prices, and causing widespread delays. He also warned that the broader economic consequences could be substantial, given the aviation sector’s critical role in trade and tourism.

To mitigate the crisis, he urged EU member states to take coordinated action. Suggested measures include joint procurement of aviation fuel, closer monitoring of fuel reserves, and the rapid identification of alternative energy supply routes.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz—through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes—has already raised concerns across global energy markets. Analysts warn that prolonged disruption could trigger ripple effects beyond Europe, affecting fuel prices and supply chains worldwide.
