A high-risk rescue operation is underway in Iran as US military teams search for a missing crew member following the downing of an American F-15 fighter jet, according to reports by BBC News and its US partner CBS.
Early reports suggest that one pilot has already been rescued, marking a significant development in what officials describe as a complex combat search-and-rescue (CSAR) mission. However, efforts continue to locate a second crew member believed to be missing deep inside Iranian territory.
CSAR missions are among the most dangerous military operations, typically conducted in hostile environments where enemy forces may also be actively searching for the same personnel. These operations often involve helicopters, refueling aircraft, and coordinated air support to ensure both recovery and protection.
Former US military officials say such missions could involve dozens of highly trained pararescue jumpers deployed via Black Hawk helicopters or parachute insertion. Once on the ground, teams prioritize locating the missing individual, providing medical assistance, and safely extracting them while evading enemy detection.
“This is harrowing and massively dangerous,” a former commander told CBS, emphasizing the extreme risks involved in such operations.
The urgency of the mission is heightened by reports that Iranian authorities have urged civilians to locate and capture the missing crew member, potentially turning the individual into a strategic bargaining asset.
Experts note that time is critical in such scenarios. Rescue teams typically work backward from the last known location of the missing personnel, expanding their search radius based on terrain and survival conditions.
Combat search-and-rescue missions have a long history, evolving significantly since World War I and becoming more sophisticated during conflicts like the Vietnam War. Today, the US Air Force’s pararescue units are considered among the most elite in the world, trained in both combat and advanced medical response.
The ongoing operation in Iran underscores the growing intensity of the conflict and highlights the risks faced by military personnel operating in contested airspace.
