40th FOBANA Convention in New York to be Dedicated to Bangabandhu

Colorful Labor Day weekend event under the slogan “Spirit of ’71, Bangladesh in Our Hearts”; aims to strengthen Bangladeshi culture and unity in the diaspora

The 40th annual convention of the Federation of Bangladeshi Associations in North America, the largest organization of Bangladeshi expatriates in North America, is scheduled to take place this September in New York. This year’s convention will be dedicated to the Father of the Nation of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Under the slogan “Spirit of ’71, Bangladesh in Our Hearts,” the three-day event will be held on September 4, 5, and 6 during the Labor Day weekend at the Evangel Christian Center in Astoria, New York, organizers announced at a press conference.

According to the organizers, FOBANA has been working tirelessly for the past 39 years to uphold Bangladeshi culture, heritage, and unity among expatriates. The 40th convention marks a significant milestone and has been dedicated to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh.

The organizers stated that the main objectives of the convention are to promote Bangladeshi culture, connect the younger generation with their roots, highlight the history of the Language Movement and the Liberation War, and strengthen cooperation within the diaspora community. FOBANA serves as a non-profit, socio-cultural platform that unites various Bangladeshi community organizations across North America.

The three-day event will include discussions on the Liberation War, a special session on Bangabandhu, seminars on the role of expatriates in building a non-communal and democratic Bangladesh, recognition of distinguished individuals for their contributions in North America, colorful cultural performances, literary and poetry sessions, business and networking events, women’s empowerment sessions, immigration seminars, and a range of interactive activities for the younger generation.

Organizers emphasized that FOBANA is more than just a convention—it is a major gathering of Bangladeshi expatriates that strengthens cultural identity and community bonds. They expressed hope that this year’s event will further showcase Bangladesh’s culture on the global stage and reinforce unity among the diaspora.

Currently, Zakaria Chowdhury is serving as Chairman of FOBANA, while Dewan Moniruzzaman is the Executive Secretary. The host committee includes Convener Nurul Amin Babu and Member Secretary Manjur Kader.

The organizers concluded the press conference by expressing gratitude to the media representatives and seeking their cooperation in making the convention a success.
