From Rapper to Statesman: The Rise of Balen Shah

Nepal’s rapper-turned-politician gains national attention as early election results place him ahead in the race for prime minister.

Balen Shah, also known as Balendra Shah, has recently emerged as one of the most talked-about political figures in South Asia. Rising from the world of music to the center of national politics, Shah’s journey reflects the story of a young leader seeking social change.
Early Life and Education

Shah was born in Kathmandu. From an early age, he showed a strong interest in music, literature, and social issues while remaining dedicated to his academic studies. He later pursued a degree in civil engineering and became involved in urban planning and development. This academic background later influenced his political ideas and plans for city development.

Music Career
Before entering politics, Shah gained popularity in Nepal’s music scene as a rapper known simply as “Balen.” During his university years, he began writing and performing rap songs that addressed social inequality, corruption, youth frustration, and the desire for change.
His music quickly resonated with young audiences across Nepal because it combined entertainment with strong social messages.

Popular Songs
Several of Shah’s songs gained widespread attention among young listeners. One of his notable tracks, Nepali Ho, highlights national identity, dignity, and the potential of Nepal’s youth. Another popular song, Balidan, delivers a strong political and social message, criticizing corruption and abuse of power. His track Mero Desh expresses patriotism and aspirations for national transformation.

Through these songs, Shah gradually became recognized not only as an artist but also as a powerful voice for social awareness in Nepal.

Entry into Politics
Despite using music to highlight social issues, Shah eventually concluded that meaningful change required direct political involvement. In 2022, he ran as an independent candidate in the Kathmandu mayoral election. Many initially considered the move bold but unlikely to succeed.

However, with strong support from young voters and a reputation for integrity, Shah won the election by a significant margin, becoming the mayor of Kathmandu and setting an example for a new generation of South Asian politicians.

Rising Toward National Leadership
Following the “Gen-Z wave” in Nepalese politics, Shah contested the national election held on March 5. Early vote counts indicate that he is leading against major political figures, including former prime minister K. P. Sharma Oli of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) and Gagan Thapa of the Nepali Congress.

According to early reports cited by the BBC’s Nepal service, Shah’s centrist Rastriya Swatantra Party is leading in more than two-thirds of the 165 directly elected parliamentary seats.
If the trend continues, the rapper-turned-politician could become Nepal’s next prime minister, marking an extraordinary transformation from the stage to the state.
