The residence of former State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury was set on fire on Friday night in Dinajpur’s Bochaganj upazila, amid growing concerns over law and order in the region.
The arson attack took place around 8:15 pm at Chowdhury’s ancestral home in the Dhantala area, according to local sources. At nearly the same time, the house of Setabganj municipality’s former mayor, Aslam, was also torched by assailants.
Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control. Although no casualties were reported, furniture and household belongings in both homes were extensively damaged.
The motive behind the attacks remains unclear. Despite repeated attempts, Bochaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam could not be reached for comment, raising questions about the administration’s response to the incident.
The arson comes amid a series of violent and vandalism-related incidents across the country, including attacks on media houses, cultural institutions, and individuals, intensifying public concern over deteriorating security conditions.
Authorities have yet to confirm whether any suspects have been identified or if an investigation has formally begun.
