Brent Christensen Confirmed as New U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh

The U.S. Senate has approved veteran diplomat Brent Christensen as Washington’s 18th ambassador to Dhaka; he previously served at the U.S. Embassy in Bangladesh as political and economic counsellor.

The United States Senate has approved the appointment of Brent Christensen as the new U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh, clearing the way for him to assume office in Dhaka as Washington’s 18th envoy to the country.

Christensen confirmed the Senate approval himself in a post on professional networking platform LinkedIn on Friday (December 19, U.S. local time). In his statement, he expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump for the nomination and said he was honored to receive the Senate’s consent to serve as the next U.S. ambassador to Bangladesh.

According to the U.S. State Department, Brent Christensen is a senior career official in the U.S. Foreign Service with extensive diplomatic experience, including prior service in Bangladesh.

Christensen previously worked at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka from 2019 to 2021, where he served as Counsellor for Political and Economic Affairs. During that tenure, he was closely involved in bilateral engagement on governance, economic cooperation, and regional security issues.

He will succeed Peter Haas, who served as the 17th U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh from March 2022 until April 2024.

Christensen’s appointment comes at a time of heightened diplomatic engagement between Washington and Dhaka, particularly amid Bangladesh’s ongoing political transition, human rights concerns, and evolving regional dynamics in South Asia.
