Kyiv, 07 December 2025 —
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he held a “very constructive” phone conversation with US peace envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, signalling progress in American efforts to broker a settlement to end Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Zelensky said the discussions focused on mechanisms to ensure Russia adheres to any potential peace deal and on establishing long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Several Ukrainian officials also joined the call from Miami, where negotiations with US representatives have entered a third day.
“Ukraine is determined to keep working in good faith with the American side to genuinely achieve peace,” Zelensky posted on X, adding that talks covered “key points that could ensure an end to the bloodshed and eliminate the threat of a new Russian invasion.”
Despite diplomatic movement, Russia has shown no signs of compromise. Overnight, Moscow launched 653 drones and 51 missiles, striking infrastructure across multiple regions. A major railway station in Fastiv, southwest of Kyiv, was destroyed, and energy facilities in eight regions were hit, triggering widespread blackouts.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed “full solidarity” with Kyiv, reaffirming France’s commitment to work with partners to secure de-escalation and pursue a ceasefire. Macron confirmed he will join Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in London on Monday for further discussions.
Starmer reiterated that Ukraine must determine its own future, noting that a proposed European peacekeeping force could play a “vital role” in guaranteeing post-war security. Moscow, however, has warned that any deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine would be considered legitimate military targets.
In Miami, US envoy Witkoff and Ukrainian security chief Rustem Umerov said they had agreed on “the framework of security arrangements”, including deterrence capabilities needed to sustain lasting peace. They emphasised that any breakthrough now depends on Russia taking steps towards “de-escalation and cessation of killing.”
Meanwhile, US-Ukraine consultations continue in Florida as Washington pushes Kyiv to consider a US-backed peace plan aimed at ending the nearly three-year-old war.
