Britain Facing Worst Flu Outbreak in a Decade

Hospitals Overwhelmed as Highly Contagious H3N2 Variant Spreads Rapidly Across the UK and Europe

London, 06 December 2025 —As winter tightens its grip, the United Kingdom is experiencing what health officials describe as the most severe flu outbreak in ten years, with hospital admissions surging to unprecedented levels. The National Health Service (NHS) reported an average of 1,717 flu hospitalizations per day last week—a 56% jump compared to the same period last year.

Health authorities say the current situation mirrors previous public health emergencies. In Northern Ireland, confirmed flu cases tripled within two weeks, rising from 273 to 954. Dr. Joanne McClean, the region’s Director of Public Health, has officially declared the situation a “flu epidemic.”

Schools are also being hit hard. At Ebrington Primary School in County Londonderry, 170 students were absent in a single day—leading the headteacher to compare it to the “Covid-era scenario,” with several children requiring hospital care.

Europe Also Impacted

The flu season has taken hold across Europe unusually early and aggressively, reflecting Australia’s recent record-breaking outbreak. The dominant strain in the UK—a slightly mutated H3N2 subtype—is known to be highly contagious and particularly severe in children.

Public health experts estimate the flu’s reproduction number (R value) has climbed to 1.4, meaning every 100 infected people are likely spreading the virus to another 140 individuals.

Hospital admissions in England alone rose 63% in the week ending 30 November, and officials fear the crisis will escalate further once the virus spreads more widely among older and vulnerable populations.

Low Vaccination Rates Raise Alarms

One of the most concerning factors behind the surge is the poor flu vaccination uptake among children. Despite free nasal spray vaccines being widely available:

Only 1 in 4 preschool children in Northern Ireland has been vaccinated.

Less than 50% of primary school children received the vaccine.

Dr. McClean warned that vaccination reduces the risk of hospitalization in children by up to 70%, calling the low uptake a major public health failure.

Pharmacies across the UK report high demand and supply pressures, yet overall vaccination rates remain far below the target of 85–90%.

Experts Urge Immediate Preventive Measures

With holiday gatherings approaching, officials warn that the flu outbreak has not yet peaked, and infections could rise even faster in the coming weeks.

Health authorities urgently recommend:

Vaccination for all eligible groups — including children up to Year 12, adults over 65, pregnant women, and those with underlying illnesses.

Staying home if experiencing fever or severe symptoms.

Frequent handwashing with soap and water.

Proper disposal of used tissues.

Covering coughs and sneezes with the elbow.

Ensuring indoor ventilation by opening windows during gatherings.

The coming weeks will be critical in determining the full impact of this flu season on the UK’s already strained health system.
