Pro-Awami League Diaspora Rallies Rock New York in Support of “Dhaka Lockdown” Campaign

Multiple demonstrations and a human chain announced by Awami League’s US chapters ahead of November 12

Bangladeshi expatriate wings of the Awami League in the United States have announced several protest rallies and a human chain in New York, expressing solidarity with and support for the party’s declared “Dhaka Lockdown” program. According to sources, these events will take place on Wednesday, November 12, at two key locations in New York.

According to information from event posters, the New York Metropolitan Awami League and the New York State Awami League will jointly organize a major protest rally at 5 PM in Jackson Heights on November 12. Jackson Heights—considered a hub for Bangladeshi expatriates—has been chosen as the venue to demonstrate strong support for the central political program. The announcement was issued on behalf of New York State Awami League President Mujibur Rahman Mia and General Secretary Shaheen Azmal.

On the same day, another significant program will be held in front of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Organized by the US Awami Jubo League, this human chain will take place at 1 PM. The youth wing’s poster highlights support for the “Dhaka Lockdown” along with several additional demands, including: protesting against those who have “illegally and unconstitutionally seized power” and are “financially corrupt,” withdrawing all “conspiratorial” cases filed against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and holding elections under a neutral caretaker government.

Posters released by each organization prominently feature images of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, and Sajeeb Wazed Joy. Organizers have urged all pro-Liberation War expatriate groups, activists, and supporters to join the programs spontaneously.

Political analysts say that these consecutive diaspora-led demonstrations, aligned with ongoing political developments in Bangladesh, have sparked considerable discussion within New York’s Bangladeshi community. They view the events as a reflection of the expatriate Awami League supporters’ unity with and active engagement in central politics.
