Washington, D.C. — August 28, 2025
President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff across the nation to honor the victims of the August 27 tragedy in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
According to a presidential proclamation, the order applies to the White House, all public buildings and grounds, military posts, naval stations, and federal vessels throughout the United States and its territories. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on August 31.
Trump also extended the directive to U.S. embassies, consulates, and other government facilities abroad, including American military bases and naval vessels.
Calling the action “a solemn tribute,” the president said the decision reflects the nation’s respect for those who lost their lives in the “senseless acts of violence” in Minneapolis.
The lowering of flags to half-staff is a long-standing tradition in the United States, marking national mourning after major tragedies or the deaths of prominent American leaders.
