Dhaka, August 8, 2025 —
In a move widely condemned as an attack on freedom of expression, prominent Bangladeshi academic and political analyst Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah has been arrested by law enforcement authorities. The arrest follows a series of public statements in which he criticized the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus and called for the establishment of an emergency government to address the country’s deepening crisis.
Just days before his detention, Kalimullah went live on social media and warned that the government was actively trying to silence his voice. “They want to shut me down because I speak the truth,” he said, referencing the ongoing suppression of dissenting opinions in Bangladesh. He accused the interim regime of engaging in widespread misconduct, including corruption, rights violations, and political intimidation.
Supporters say the charges against Kalimullah are entirely fabricated and were filed to punish him for exercising his right to free speech. Police officials have yet to release a clear list of charges, stating only that he was arrested following “multiple complaints.”
Targeted for Speaking Out
Professor Kalimullah, who previously chaired the National Election Observation Council (JANIPOP), has long been known for his bold views on governance and electoral integrity. His recent public statements, including the call for an emergency administration, appear to have triggered a swift and forceful response from the state.
“This arrest is not just about silencing one man—it’s about sending a message to all citizens who dare to speak out,” said a Dhaka-based human rights lawyer. “The use of law enforcement to intimidate intellectuals and suppress debate undermines the very foundation of democracy.”
Civil society groups, journalists, and political observers have denounced the arrest, calling it part of a growing pattern of authoritarian control since the formation of the interim government earlier this year.
National and International Reaction
The arrest has sparked outrage on social media, with thousands demanding Kalimullah’s immediate release. Statements of concern have also begun to emerge from international human rights organizations, warning that Bangladesh is sliding into a dangerous phase of repression.
“This is a serious violation of international norms on freedom of expression,” said a spokesperson for Human Rights Watch’s South Asia division. “The government must immediately disclose the charges and ensure Professor Kalimullah receives full legal protection.”
Meanwhile, protestors in Dhaka and several other cities have taken to the streets, denouncing what they call the government’s ongoing crackdown on dissent. Political analysts warn that the arrest could inflame tensions in an already volatile political climate.
As of this report, Kalimullah remains in police custody. His legal team is preparing to file a petition for bail and has vowed to challenge the arrest in court.
