Zelensky May Give Up Crimea, Hints Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is prepared to give up Crimea to secure a peace deal with Russia, suggested U.S. President Donald Trump. He has also called for an immediate halt to Russian attacks on Ukraine, according to a report by Reuters.

In response to journalists’ questions in New Jersey, Trump expressed disappointment at Russia’s continued aggression. He mentioned that his discussions with Zelensky at the Vatican on Saturday were fruitful.

Referring to his conversation with Zelensky, Trump said, “He seemed quite composed. I believe he understands the gravity of the situation. I think he is ready to make a deal.”

It should be noted that leaders from various countries, including Trump and Zelensky, had gathered at the Vatican to attend the funeral of Catholic spiritual leader Pope Francis.

The issue of Crimea’s handover has surfaced before as a precondition for a peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv. When asked whether Zelensky would surrender Crimea — a Black Sea territory forcibly annexed by Russian forces in 2014 — Trump replied, “That’s what I think. Crimea is a matter from over a decade ago.”

Seizing the opportunity, Trump criticized his Democratic predecessors over Crimea. He said, “There’s no point in discussing Crimea with me. Obama and Biden should be questioned about it. This is Biden’s war. Thousands of lives are being lost needlessly. I want to resolve this crisis.”

According to U.S. proposals, a draft compromise has been prepared to end the three-year-long Ukraine war, which includes accepting Russian control over Crimea. It also suggests recognizing Russian occupation over some additional parts of Ukraine. However, European and Ukrainian sides have proposed a counteroffer, suggesting border-related talks after a ceasefire is established.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Secretary of State has warned that if Russia and Ukraine do not come to the negotiation table sincerely, the United States may withdraw as a mediator.

Speaking to NBC News, Rubio said that a deal in Ukraine must be reached soon. Otherwise, the U.S. will not waste money and time on efforts without signs of progress.
