US Senator Gary Peters to Visit Dhaka on Tuesday for High-Level Meetings

US Democratic Senator Gary Charles Peters is set to arrive in Dhaka past midnight on Tuesday for a one-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between the United States and Bangladesh.

During his visit, the 67-year-old senator will hold separate meetings with the chiefs of the three armed forces—Army, Navy, and Air Force—as well as Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain. According to reports, discussions with the military service chiefs may focus on potential defense cooperation, including the possibility of Bangladesh purchasing US-made weapons.

In addition to military cooperation, Senator Peters is expected to discuss broader security issues, including regional stability, counterterrorism efforts, and maritime security in the Bay of Bengal. The senator, who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, may also explore opportunities for enhanced defense training programs and technology transfers between the two nations.

Beyond security matters, Peters may engage with Bangladeshi officials on issues related to trade, climate change, and economic collaboration. His visit comes amid growing strategic interest from the United States in South Asia, particularly in strengthening ties with key regional partners like Bangladesh.

The senator’s trip underscores the Biden administration’s continued engagement with Bangladesh on multiple fronts, including defense, economic cooperation, and democratic governance.
