The United States is moving towards taking control of Greenland, said US President Donald Trump. He further claimed that the residents of Greenland want to be with America. Trump made these remarks while traveling on the presidential aircraft, Air Force One, on Saturday (January 25).
Even before taking office as president, Trump had expressed his desire to purchase Greenland multiple times. On Saturday, he reiterated this aspiration. While speaking with journalists aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I think we’re going to get it (Greenland). The 57,000 residents there want to be with us.”
Trump’s statement comes at a time when Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed her displeasure in a phone call with Trump last week, stating that Greenland is not for sale.
This is not the first time the Republican leader has made such comments about Greenland. On December 22 last year, Trump expressed interest in buying Greenland on his social media platform, Truth Social. In 2019, when Trump proposed purchasing Greenland, Danish leaders strongly opposed the idea.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. It is the world’s largest island and hosts massive installations for US space projects. Strategically, the island is crucial for the US due to its location on the shortest waterway between North America and Europe. Additionally, Greenland has significant mining reserves. Analysts suggest that acquiring this autonomous Danish territory would be the “deal of the century” for the United States.
