Ukraine says 15 people hurt in ‘massive’ Russian attack on Kyiv

The Voice News:On May 24, 2025, Russia launched one of the largest aerial assaults on Kyiv since the onset of the war, deploying 14 ballistic missiles and 250 drones. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted six missiles and 245 drones; however, falling debris caused significant damage across six districts of the capital. Fifteen civilians were injured, including two children, with the Obolon district being among the hardest hit. Fires broke out in residential areas, and a shopping mall sustained damage.

The assault occurred shortly after Ukraine and Russia engaged in a significant prisoner exchange, each side releasing 307 individuals as part of a broader agreement to swap 1,000 prisoners. This exchange, brokered in Istanbul, was seen as a rare moment of cooperation amid ongoing hostilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, urging the international community to impose new sanctions on Russia. He emphasized that the continuation of the war lies in Moscow’s hands and that increased pressure is necessary to push Russia toward a ceasefire agreement.

The Russian government claimed the strikes targeted military facilities, including missile and drone production sites. However, the widespread damage to civilian infrastructure has drawn international criticism. European Union Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernová, described the attacks as “horrific,” highlighting the ongoing challenges in achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

As of May 25, 2025, Kyiv continues to recover from the assault, with emergency services working to clear debris and restore essential services. The attack underscores the fragile nature of peace efforts and the complexities involved in negotiating a lasting ceasefire.
