Ukraine Calls for Ceasefire Before Direct Talks with Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for an unconditional ceasefire before engaging in direct talks with Russia. In a social media post on Sunday, Zelensky stated that any effort to end the war must begin with a ceasefire. The statement was reported by Reuters.

Zelensky noted that Russia’s expression of willingness to end the war is a positive sign, but emphasized that halting combat is the first step toward peace. On Saturday, he received support from the United States and major European powers for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, which is set to begin on Monday.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Sunday morning that Russia is ready for direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on May 15.

In his post, Zelensky added that Ukraine is ready to negotiate and that there is no justification for continued bloodshed. He expressed hope that Russia would ensure a comprehensive, lasting, and reliable ceasefire starting Monday.

Zelensky’s Chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, stated that securing the ceasefire must come before any further discussions, warning against accepting any hidden agendas behind Russia’s diplomatic language.

Other top Ukrainian officials echoed similar sentiments. Andriy Kovalenko, a member of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, remarked that Russia has historically avoided ceasefires and must commit to one this time.
