U.S State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller tackled a variety of international issues, including regional stability in South Asia, press freedom challenges in Bangladesh, and the ongoing reciprocal sanctions between the United States and China.

When asked about a controversial social media post by an advisor to Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus advocating the annexation of parts of India by Bangladesh, Miller stated he was unaware of the comment and refrained from addressing it without proper context.

On Bangladesh’s ongoing press freedom issues, Miller emphasized that the U.S. has consistently urged the Government of Bangladesh to uphold media freedoms and ensure cases against journalists are resolved in line with the rule of law. This follows reports of over 30 journalists detained without bail for more than 60 days, drawing international criticism from organizations like the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders.

Finally, regarding China’s recent imposition of visa restrictions on U.S. personnel, Miller dismissed concerns about their impact, asserting that the U.S. remains committed to holding China accountable for its actions.

The briefing highlighted the State Department’s steadfast commitment to addressing global issues while promoting human rights and international stability.
