Turkish National Indicted in Germany for Spying on Alleged Gulen Supporters

BERLIN – German federal prosecutors have indicted a Turkish national, identified as Mehmet K. under German privacy laws, for allegedly spying on individuals linked to cleric Fethullah Gulen, authorities announced Friday.

The suspect is accused of contacting Turkey’s police and intelligence service through anonymous letters to provide information about people he believed to be affiliated with the Gulen movement.

Gulen, a U.S.-based cleric, leads a prominent Islamic movement and has been accused by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan of orchestrating a 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, allegations he denies.

The suspect is not in custody, prosecutors confirmed.
