Washington, March 18, 2025 (AFP) – Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the withdrawal of Secret Service protection for Hunter Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden, as well as for Biden’s daughter, Ashley Biden. Trump’s decision is seen as a retaliatory measure against his political opponents.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “More than 18 agents are assigned to Hunter Biden’s security. This is ridiculous.” He also mentioned that Ashley Biden’s 13 security agents would be withdrawn.
According to U.S. law, only former presidents and their spouses receive lifelong Secret Service protection. Their children are eligible for protection only if they are under 16. However, it is common for former presidents to request extended security for their adult children.
A Secret Service spokesperson confirmed the decision, stating that they are aware of the security withdrawal and will comply with the directive.
Hunter Biden has long been a target of Republican criticism. In the final days of Joe Biden’s presidency, he pardoned his son for tax and firearm-related offenses, which led to significant controversy. Trump has now announced plans to revoke that pardon, though the legal basis for such an action remains unclear.
This move is unprecedented and could set a new political precedent in the U.S.
