U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Sunday, imposing a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada and a 10% tariff on China. However, on Monday (February 3), Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on the microblogging site X that Trump had suspended the tariffs on Mexican goods for one week. Later, Claudia confirmed the matter in a press conference.
She stated that she had a “good discussion” with Trump, following which he decided to suspend the tariffs.
However, Trump set a condition that Mexico must increase its border enforcement to prevent illegal drugs from entering the United States. In response, Mexico will immediately deploy 10,000 National Guard troops along the border.
These troops will particularly focus on fentanyl, a drug that Trump is most concerned about.
On the other hand, Trump promised the Mexican president that he would ensure illegal weapons do not enter Mexico from the United States.
Trump himself confirmed the suspension of tariffs on Mexico for one month. On his social media platform, Truth Social, he stated that high-ranking U.S. officials would speak with Mexican officials in the coming days for detailed discussions. He mentioned that he would negotiate with the Mexican president to establish an agreement between the two countries.
Additionally, Trump also spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the tariffs. However, it is unclear whether he has suspended the tariffs on Canada. Trump stated that he would speak with Trudeau again later today.
