U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to hold talks with Iran regarding the nuclear agreement. On Thursday, he sent a letter to Iranian authorities, expressing his hope that Iran would agree to discussions. Trump believes such talks would be highly beneficial for Iran.
In an interview with Fox Business Network on Friday, Trump said, “I expect Iran to come to the table because it will be very good for them.” He added, “I think they want to receive this letter. The other option is that we will have to do something because there will be no more nuclear weapons.”
According to Reuters, there was no immediate response from Iran’s foreign ministry regarding Trump’s remarks. The letter is believed to be addressed to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The White House also did not respond immediately to requests for comments.
Trump mentioned two potential approaches to dealing with Iran: military action or negotiating a deal. “I would prefer a deal because I do not want to hurt Iran. Iranians are great people,” he said.
Since taking office for his second term in January, Trump has introduced significant changes to U.S. foreign policy. He has been pushing for a ceasefire in the ongoing destructive war between Russia and Ukraine, applying pressure on Ukraine to reach a settlement. His efforts to end the three-year-long conflict have caused concern among Western allies.
In 2018, during his first term, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and six world powers. In February, he stated that he wanted a deal with Iran that would prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons.
