U.S. President Donald Trump has described India’s recent missile strikes in Pakistan as “regrettable.” Responding to reporters’ questions at the White House, Trump said, “We’ve just learned about the incident. It’s unfortunate. Given the long-standing tensions between the two countries, many may have anticipated something like this. I hope both sides bring this to an end quickly.”
The missile strikes were launched around 1 AM local time on Wednesday, following a recent terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, which India blames on Pakistan. The Indian government has stated that the offensive was a response to that incident.
In reaction, Pakistan has indicated it is preparing to respond to the Indian strikes, raising fears of further escalation in the region.
The United Nations has also expressed concern over the military action. Secretary-General António Guterres said the international community is alarmed by the growing conflict between India and Pakistan. “India’s military activity along the Line of Control and international border is deeply concerning. We urge both sides to exercise maximum restraint,” he stated.
The UN emphasized that the world does not want renewed military tension in South Asia and warned that any escalation could lead to catastrophic consequences.
Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Washington confirmed that India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has briefed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the details of the operation.
