Train Hijacked in Pakistan, Hundreds of Passengers Taken Hostage

Armed rebels have attacked a passenger train in Balochistan, Pakistan, taking control of the train and holding hundreds of passengers hostage. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Zafar Express, which was traveling from Quetta to Rawalpindi.

According to Pakistani police, at least three people, including the train driver, have been injured. Security forces have been deployed to the area.

Incident Details

Pakistani news outlet Dawn reported that gunmen attacked the Peshawar-bound train in Bolan district. The Balochistan provincial government has declared an emergency response.

Shahid Rind, a government spokesperson, confirmed that heavy gunfire was reported between Pehro Kunri and Gadala. The railway controller, Muhammad Kashif, stated that the train has nine compartments and was carrying approximately 500 passengers. The attackers stopped the train at Tunnel No. 8, and authorities are trying to establish contact with the passengers and railway staff.

A police official, speaking anonymously to AFP, mentioned that the train is stuck at a tunnel in a mountainous region, making it easier for militants to hide and execute such attacks.

Government Response

The Balochistan government has instructed emergency services to remain on high alert. The Civil Hospital in Quetta has declared an emergency, calling all doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and medical staff to report immediately.

Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned the attack, stating that such violent actions against innocent passengers will not be tolerated.

Background

Terrorist incidents have increased significantly in Balochistan over the past year. In November 2024, a suicide bombing at Quetta Railway Station killed at least 26 people and injured 62 others.

Authorities are currently assessing the scale of the attack and determining the involvement of terrorist groups. The government has urged the public not to believe in rumors.
