The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is advancing into a new era by developing air routes for air taxis and cargo drones. The primary goal of this initiative is to create a smart transportation system, make urban transport more sustainable, and reduce traffic congestion on city roads. Within the next 20 months, the design and regulations for these air routes will be finalized.
Air Route System
Designating specific air routes for air taxis and drones is crucial. It ensures safety while making urban transport more efficient. The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Director-General, Saif Al Suwaidi, stated that this initiative would enhance airspace management and simplify urban mobility.
Artificial intelligence (AI) will play a key role in managing these air routes. Technology Innovation Institute (TII) and Aspire, two leading tech companies, are working on improving the airspace control system. This will enable route optimization, safe flights, and collision avoidance, ultimately creating a fast and cost-effective transport system within cities.
Air Taxi Operations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
In Dubai, an agreement has been signed with Joby Aviation to operate air taxis. Under this agreement, air taxis will fly from Dubai International Airport to various locations, including Palm Jumeirah. The service is expected to launch by 2026.
Similarly, in Abu Dhabi, Archer Aviation is set to introduce electric air taxis in 2026. This service will make urban transportation easier and reduce road traffic congestion.
Air taxis departing from Dubai International Airport will have strict safety measures in place to avoid collisions with passenger aircraft. Additionally, AI will enhance the automation of control systems, ensuring passenger safety.
