Tom Tykwer to Open 75th Berlin Film Festival with New Movie

Famous German director Tom Tykwer, known for Run Lola Run and Cloud Atlas, will open the 75th Berlin International Film Festival with his latest movie, Das Licht (The Light).

This is Tykwer’s first feature film since A Hologram for a King in 2016. The story is a family drama set in modern Germany, starring Lars Eidinger, Nicolette Krebitz, and Tala al Deen. It focuses on the Engels family, whose relationships have been strained for years. Their lives change when Farrah, a mysterious housekeeper from Syria, joins them and reveals hidden emotions. Farrah also has her own secret plan that will deeply impact the family.

Festival Director Tricia Tuttle praised the film, saying, “Tom Tykwer finds beauty and joy in our complicated world and captures modern life perfectly on screen.”

Tykwer expressed excitement, calling the Berlinale “the festival of my life” and saying the film reflects his personal longing.

This will be Tykwer’s third time opening the Berlinale, following Heaven in 2002 and The International in 2009.

Das Licht was produced by X Filme Creative Pool with several international partners. It will be released in Germany on March 20, 2025, with world sales handled by Beta Cinema.

The 75th Berlinale runs from February 13 to 23, 2025, and director Todd Haynes (Carol, Far From Heaven) will lead the international jury.
