Tom Cruise to Star in Supernatural Thriller ‘Deeper’

Tom Cruise is set to star in Deeper, a supernatural thriller directed by Doug Liman, the filmmaker has confirmed. Liman shared the news during a recent screening in New York, revealing that he is excited to create a “scary” movie, something he and Cruise have never done before.

Although reports suggest that Deeper could be Liman’s next project, it’s not yet confirmed. The film is currently set up at Warner Bros.

Deeper is about an astronaut who faces a terrifying force while exploring a deep, uncharted trench in the ocean. The project has been in development for nearly a decade. Initially, Bradley Cooper was supposed to star, and the film was set up at MGM in 2016, but it has gone through several changes over the years without moving forward.

If Deeper gets made, it will be the third or fourth collaboration between Tom Cruise and Doug Liman, following Edge of Tomorrow and American Made. The two are also working on a NASA movie that will be filmed in outer space, in partnership with SpaceX.

Tom Cruise has been busy lately, with talks of starring in a sequel to his 1990 NASCAR film Days of Thunder. After Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, which is followed by a sequel next summer, Cruise is also set to work on a new film with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu for Warner Bros.

Doug Liman is fresh off the success of his Road House remake, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, which became Amazon MGM Studios’ biggest debut, and The Instigators, a heist film starring Casey Affleck and Matt Damon, which is also getting a sequel.
