India’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has received a bomb threat. On Thursday (December 13) afternoon, an email containing the threat was sent to the official website of the bank. This marks the second such threat in less than a month.
According to news agency Reuters, a senior police officer in Mumbai confirmed that the threatening email was sent to the official email address of the newly appointed RBI Governor, Sanjay Malhotra.
The Reserve Bank of India has already filed a complaint regarding the matter. Based on the complaint, Mumbai Police have lodged a case against unknown individuals and initiated an investigation. Earlier, on November 16, the RBI’s Customer Care Department had also received a similar bomb threat.
Quoting police sources, the Hindustan Times reported that the threatening email was carefully worded and sent using a VPN for anonymity. The email stated that the bank would be bombed and destroyed.
This year, India has seen hundreds of bomb threats targeting schools, railway stations, airports, and flights. However, most of these have later been proven to be hoaxes.
Earlier this week, on Monday, at least 40 schools in Delhi received bomb threats via email, causing panic among students and parents. Even the iconic Taj Mahal has been targeted with such threats. On December 3, a threat was issued to blow up the Taj Mahal with a bomb.
