The Central Bank of Syria has appointed Maysa Sabrini as its new governor, marking the first time in the country’s history that a woman has taken this position in the Middle Eastern nation.
Maysa holds a master’s degree in accounting from Damascus University. She began her career at the Central Bank of Syria in 2010. From there, she represented the bank on the executive board of the Damascus Securities Exchange until 2018. Later that year, she was transferred to head the Office Control Department of the Central Bank. Until her recent promotion, she remained in that position.
On Monday, Maysa replaced former governor Mohammad Issam Hazimeh through a promotion. Hazimeh was appointed in 2021 by Syria’s former president, Bashar al-Assad. Following an unprecedented uprising by anti-government armed groups, Bashar was ousted and forced to seek asylum in Russia in early December. However, Hazimeh remained in his position as governor for three weeks after Bashar’s fall.
