Sudden Floods and Landslides Kill 30 in India Over Two Days

The Voice News: At least 30 people have died in the past two days due to sudden floods and landslides across various states in northeastern India. On Saturday (May 31), 14 people lost their lives in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram due to landslides and flash floods. These states have been severely affected by the natural disaster. In Assam alone, more than 60,000 people have been impacted across 12 districts, according to Indian news outlet NDTV.

In Arunachal Pradesh’s East Kameng district, a vehicle skidded off the road during a landslide, killing seven members of the same family.

In Assam, continuous rain over the past 24 hours has caused landslides, leading to five fatalities, all reported from Kamrup Metropolitan District, as confirmed by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Six districts in the state are currently experiencing flooding.

Urban Development Minister Jayanta Malla reported on Friday that three women were killed in a landslide in the Bonda area on the outskirts of Guwahati city.

Guwahati recorded 111 mm of rainfall, breaking the 67-year record for the highest single-day rainfall in the city. Water levels of the Brahmaputra River and several other rivers in the northeast have also risen significantly.

The Meteorological Department has issued Red and Orange alerts for some parts of Assam, and Orange and Yellow alerts for the rest of northeastern India.

In a tragic accident last night, a Brezza vehicle carrying members of two families fell into a gorge in Arunachal Pradesh due to a landslide, killing seven people. A Sumo vehicle was also stranded near a landslide-affected road, but fortunately, no one was harmed.

As the monsoon rains continue, authorities are working to ensure safety on roadways.

Additionally, several other landslides have been reported across the state. State Disaster Response Forces (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and local residents are conducting rescue operations.
