A trade union called Verdi has announced a strike at 11 airports in Germany, including Frankfurt and Munich, to pressure ongoing wage negotiations for airport workers. The other affected airports are Cologne-Bonn, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Dortmund, Hanover, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin, and Leipzig-Halle.
The strike call comes after the second round of wage negotiations for public sector workers failed. Verdi is demanding an 8% wage increase for around 2.5 million public sector employees, higher bonuses, and an additional three days of leave. However, local municipal authorities and the federal government have said these demands are not financially feasible.
A third round of negotiations is scheduled for next week. According to Reuters, over 500,000 air passengers are expected to face disruptions, with thousands of flights already canceled.
