Statement by Awami League Joint General Secretary A. F. M. Bahauddin Nasim Protesting the Acquittal of All Defendants in the August 21 Grenade Attack Case

In his statement, he said, “August 21 is a dark day in the history of democratic civilization. On this day in 2004, a heinous grenade attack was carried out at a peace rally against terrorism organized by the Bangladesh Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital. This was one of the most horrific incidents in the history of humanity. By politically exploiting the judiciary, those responsible for this barbaric attack have been acquitted, setting a despicable precedent. This brutal attack was carried out with the intent to eliminate the Bangladesh Awami League.

In that savage assault, the President of the Bangladesh Awami League and the daughter of Bangabandhu, Sheikh Hasina, was severely injured and lost the hearing ability in one ear permanently. Awami League activists formed a human shield to protect her life. However, this barbaric attack claimed the lives of 24 people, including women leader Ivy Rahman and Volunteer League leader Kuddus Patwari, and left over a thousand leaders and activists injured. Many of them continue to suffer from the splinters embedded in their bodies, enduring relentless pain.

I, too, was grievously injured that day, bearing the enduring agony of splinters. For the families of the deceased and the injured victims, today marks another nightmare. The judiciary is the ultimate recourse for victims seeking justice. But today, the judiciary has been misused to block our path to justice. The ruling power has manipulated the judiciary, obstructing its impartiality and fairness.”

In his statement, he further said, “The country’s highest court has acquitted these identified killers who had even confessed to their crimes. This undermines both the rule of law and the establishment of justice. However, this is not the end. We believe that the democracy-loving people of this country will seize any opportunity to appeal to the higher courts. Alongside this, we will remain relentlessly committed to ensuring the highest punishment for those responsible for this barbaric attack.”
