Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Announces Release Date

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has officially set its release date, just days after the franchise’s third installment achieved record-breaking success at the global box office. The highly anticipated film is slated to hit cinemas on March 19, 2027, just ahead of the Easter holiday weekend.

Currently, the film is still in the developmental stages, with no official director or cast announced. However, Jeff Fowler, who has directed all previous Sonic movies, is expected to return. Ben Schwartz will also reprise his role as the voice of Sonic, continuing the beloved character’s iconic presence on screen.

The news of Sonic 4 was first reported by Variety in December 2024, ahead of Sonic 3’s release. The announcement was later confirmed by Schwartz on X (formerly Twitter), where he shared a screenshot of the article with an enthusiastic message: “THIS. IS. NOT. A. DRILL. SONIC 4. 2027.AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!”

The excitement comes after Sonic the Hedgehog 3 became the highest-grossing film in the series, grossing an impressive $420 million worldwide. This surpasses the $405 million earned by Sonic 2 and the $320 million made by the original Sonic the Hedgehog. With these successes, it’s no surprise that a fourth movie is on the way.

Sonic 3 introduced fans to Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by the legendary Keanu Reeves, alongside the return of the iconic Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey. The movie’s ending appeared to signal the end of both Shadow and Robotnik’s storylines; however, post-credit scenes hinted that Reeves’ character survived.

Regarding Carrey’s character, writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller have teased Robotnik’s fate, with Miller joking to GamesRadar that the Fast & Furious franchise has shown that characters can always return if necessary. Casey added, “I would say ‘of course he’s dead, it was a space explosion, he’s completely dead… unless, maybe…’ That all depends on Jim, I think.”

With Sonic 4 now officially on the horizon, fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the high-speed adventures of their favorite blue hedgehog.
