Slovakia Announces End to Financial and Military Aid to Ukraine

Slovakia has announced it will stop providing financial and military support to Ukraine. The Central European nation stated that Ukraine is not strong enough to negotiate from a position of military power.

According to a report by Anadolu Agency, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico shared an open letter on the social media platform X on Saturday. In the letter, he wrote, “Slovakia will not financially or militarily support Ukraine to continue the war. If others want to do so, we will respect that.”

Fico emphasized Slovakia’s opposition to the concept of “peace through strength,” stating, “Ukraine is never strong enough to negotiate from a position of military power.”

He also mentioned that during a recent EU summit, Slovakia proposed the necessity of an immediate ceasefire, which was rejected by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and many EU member states.

Additionally, Fico said Slovakia demanded the inclusion of “the need to restart the gas transit through Ukraine to Slovakia and Western Europe” in the summit’s conclusions. He argued that without the resumption of Russian gas supplies through Ukraine, ensuring Europe’s competitiveness would be impossible.

The announcement comes amid global discussions surrounding a recent unprecedented verbal clash between U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
