Microsoft has announced that it will shut down its audio-video calling service, Skype, in May 2025. The company is encouraging users to transition to Microsoft Teams, where they can log in using their Skype accounts to retain contacts and chat history.
Launched in 2003, Skype revolutionized internet-based communication by offering free voice and video calls, significantly impacting the traditional landline industry. It quickly became one of the most popular communication platforms worldwide.
Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion, making it one of the largest acquisitions at that time. However, in recent years, Skype has faced stiff competition from services like Zoom, Google Meet, and WhatsApp.
With Microsoft prioritizing Teams as its primary communication platform, Skype users are advised to migrate before the shutdown.
