Pratul Mukhopadhyay, the celebrated Bengali lyricist, composer, and singer, has passed away at the age of 83. He had been undergoing treatment at the ICU of SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, after being critically ill. Mukhopadhyay was admitted to the ICU following a rapid decline in his condition, just days after undergoing abdominal surgery and suffering from heart-related complications.
Born on June 25, 1942, in undivided Bengal’s Barishal, Pratul Mukhopadhyay was raised in West Bengal after migrating with his family following the partition. His father, Prabhatchandra Mukhopadhyay, was a government school teacher, and his mother was Bani Mukhopadhyay.
From a young age, Mukhopadhyay showed a passion for poetry and set his words to music. Despite never receiving formal training in music, he developed a unique ability to blend emotions with melody. His compositions spanned genres, including Bengali modern songs, Hindi film music, and even Japanese music, earning him a diverse fan base.
One of his most beloved songs, ‘Ami Banglay Gaan Gai’, which was released in March 2011, continues to hold a special place in the hearts of his admirers.

Pratul Mukhopadhyay’s passing is a great loss to the Bengali music world, as he leaves behind a rich legacy of musical creations that will continue to inspire generations.
