Sexual Violence and Rape of Women in Bangladesh Reach Alarming Levels

The surge in sexual violence, including rape, has become a critical issue in Bangladesh, with horrifying cases reported daily. The recent plight of an eight-year-old girl, a victim of alleged rape, has highlighted the grim reality of the situation. Activists and human rights organizations are calling for urgent global attention to address this crisis and ensure justice for the victims.

The tragic case of the young girl is not an isolated incident but part of a broader, troubling trend of rape, gang rape, sexual assault, and harassment that has plagued the nation. Fauzia Moslem, president of the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, expressed deep concern, stating, “Society is descending into chaos, where lawlessness and criminal impunity are growing. The failure of law enforcement, compromises, and lack of accountability are empowering criminals.”

A report by the Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation (MSF) revealed that February 2025 alone documented 295 incidents of violence against women and children, a rise from January’s 271 cases. The report also highlighted the role of extremist groups in perpetuating these crimes. Additionally, 21 women from various professions in Dhaka reported experiencing sexual harassment in the past three months.

According to Ain o Salish Kendra, a Dhaka-based human rights organization, February saw 46 women fall victim to rape, including 22 minors. In January, the numbers were similarly alarming, with 39 cases, 15 of which involved minors.

The situation has reached a critical point, with activists and human rights organizations calling for urgent global attention and intervention. They emphasize the need for stricter law enforcement, accountability, and support systems to combat this pervasive issue. The international community is urged to raise its voice and provide assistance to prevent further atrocities.
